The Importance of Skin Exfoliation
Fall is upon us once again in Midcoast Maine and the air is getting cool and crisp. We love this time of the year and the colors that burst across the landscape. Along with all the beauty that fall brings to Maine, the seasonal temperature changes take a toll on our skin. With exfoliation, we can help to maintain our youthful and healthy glow year round.
What is exfoliation? Exfoliation is the removal of surface dry skin cells.
How often should I exfoliate? The frequency depends on what you are using as a scrub. If you are you using aggressive methods, such as hand-held devices or tiny granules, it’s recommended two to four times a week. If you’re using a washcloth and a gentle, circular motion to exfoliate, you should do that daily.
Are you exfoliating too much? The telltale signs are excessive dryness, irritation, redness, and sensitivity if you are exfoliating too often or too aggressively.
Benefits of exfoliating your skin:
- Keeps the skin soft and glowing
- Buffs the dead skin, keeping your pores from clogging and limiting acne
- Speeds up the skin’s natural renewal process
- Removal of dead skin cells helps with skin discoloration
- Promotes visibly brighter skin and keeps fine lines and wrinkles in check
How does exfoliation reduce fine lines and wrinkles? As we age, the skin renewal cycle slows, which can cause dry, thicker, and duller-looking skin. When you remove the buildup of these dead cells on the surface of your skin, you are exposing the younger, living cells underneath, giving you a more vibrant, glowing look.
You also can exfoliate with facial peels. We offer the Artic Berry Peel by Eminence Organics, which restores radiance, reduces find lines and wrinkles, reduces dark spots, decreases inflammation, improves acne and improves skin dullness.
