DERMABRASION & DERMAPLANING

A buildup of dead skin cells, fine baby hairs (also referred to as “peach fuzz”), and dirt can create an uneven surface that makes it difficult to apply makeup or allow skin products to be absorbed and start working. Skin irregularities such as fine lines, wrinkles, melasma, and scars can also occur due to a combination of sun exposure, aging, environmental aggressors, and other causes.

Two skincare and beauty treatments—dermaplaning and dermabrasion—at Rockland, Maine’s Skin Klinic & Day Spa can improve the appearance of visible skin flaws. These techniques make the skin look and feel smoother and more refreshed.

What Are Dermabrasion and Dermaplaning?

Dermabrasion and dermaplaning are minimally invasive skin resurfacing procedures that remove unwanted material form the surface, but they accomplish this in different ways.

Dermabrasion involves “sanding” the outer surface of the skin with a specialized instrument to remove the outer layer. Once the dead skin has been polished away, a healthier layer is unveiled—and revitalized healing processes further improve the look and feel. This reduces scars, wrinkles, pigmentation, and pre-cancerous spots.

For dermaplaning, a painless blade called a dermatome is used to gently remove the unwanted hair that some people may feel self-conscious about, along with a layer of dead skin at the same time. The result is a brighter, softer, and smoother surface that allows makeup to glide on more flawlessly and routinely used skincare products to work more effectively.

Why Choose Skin Klinic & Day Spa for Dermabrasion and Dermaplaning?

Our registered nurses at Skin Klinic & Day Spa are licensed and skilled in providing both dermabrasion and dermaplaning. The first step involves meeting one-on-one with one of our specialists for a consultation to learn more about whether these treatments would work best for you based on your goals. We aim to provide the most effective skin rejuvenation solutions in a safe environment.

What Is the Dermabrasion and Dermaplaning Experience at Skin Klinic & Day Spa?

Dermabrasion and dermaplaning are both simple, low-risk procedures but they should be performed by a professional. The Skin Klinic & Day Spa registered nurses complete a dermabrasion procedure in just a few minutes or sometimes over one hour if larger areas of skin are being treated. Local or general anesthesia or oral sedation may be provided to numb the skin during either procedure. We will answer any questions about pain management methods during your consultation. Postoperative dressings are used to keep the skin clean and moist while the skin is healing from dermabrasion.

What Can I Expect from Recovery and Results After Dermabrasion and Dermaplaning?

Patients tend to only experience mild side effects, such as temporary redness, after dermabrasion. These effects go away on their own—but it may take around two weeks for the skin to fully heal following a dermabrasion procedure.

Some minor, short-term side effects caused by dermaplaning include light peeling or flaking, redness, swelling, and a burning or tingling sensation that may last for a few days. No downtime is necessary after dermaplaning, however, so patients can go back to their usual activities as soon as they would like. The luminosity of the skin improves right away after dermaplaning, but it may take several days for the full results to be noticeable.
