Chemical Peels

Our skin is a tough layer that covers and protects our body—but in doing so, it constantly gets damaged, not only by external stress from exposure to sunlight, pollution, dirt, germs, and weather changes, but also due to the internal changes that are occurring in our skin as we age. Chemical peels at Rockland, Maine’s Skin Klinic & Day Spa are designed to safely remove the top layers of damaged skin on the face, neck, and hands. These treatments represent an important method of keeping the skin in good health.

Each chemical peel is performed by a registered nurse who is experienced in skin resurfacing treatments. The Skin Klinic & Day Spa team strives for the highest standards for patient safety and comfort, aiming to provide the most aesthetically pleasing and natural-looking results. We can help each patient find the ideal chemical peel for their skin type.

What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are skin resurfacing treatments designed to improve the appearance of the skin by addressing numerous skin imperfections, such as wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, freckles, redness, rosacea, dilated pores, scarring, dryness, acne, pre-cancerous growths, and more.

Specially formulated acid solutions are used to prompt the exfoliation. Soon after the peel is applied, the outermost layer of skin begins to flake away. The result is skin that is smoother, less wrinkled, and more youthful looking in comparison to the old skin.

There are three different options available: light, medium, and deep.

Superficial/Light Peels

The Skin Klinic & Day Spa team recommends light peels for cosmetic problems that primarily are on the outermost layer of skin. The epidermis is removed during this gentle, low-risk peel to address skin concerns such as fine wrinkles, acne, uneven skin tone, and dryness.

Medium Peels

Medium peels from Skin Klinic & Day Spa get rid of the epidermis as well as the upper part of the dermis, which is the middle layer of skin. These target wrinkles, minor acne scars, minor hyperpigmentation, and sun damage.

Deep Peels

Deep peels are used more rarely for moderate to severe skin concerns, such as extensive sun damage, deep scars, and pre-cancerous growths. They provide the most dramatic results, but also require the most down time for healing after.

SkinMedica®

SkinMedica® peels are superficial chemical peels that create a more uniform complexion by addressing signs of aging and sun exposure.

VI Peels

VI peels are different types of gentle exfoliation treatments that correct visible signs of aging with minimal downtime or discomfort.

When the solution is applied to your skin, the resulting reaction may cause it to feel hot for a few minutes. This solution will be left on for a specific amount of time. The length of the procedure depends on the strength of the peel, but all are usually completed within 30 to 90 minutes.

What Can I Expect from Recovery and Results After Chemical Peels?

Some common side effects associated with chemical peels include redness, tightness, irritation, swelling, blistering, and scaling that can persist for several days. The effects can be summed up as a sunburn-like reaction. Please note that your skin will temporarily be more vulnerable to sunlight for a while after a chemical peel.
